About Elkton, Virginia

Elkton is a town of 2,941 people in Rockingham County, on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. It grew up around a general store that George Conrad built about 1812. In 1816 the store became a post office with Conrad as its first postmaster, and during the Civil War, Conrad's Store served as a Confederate post office.

After the war, mail service stopped in September 1866, then started and stopped again for years. That ended in 1881, when the Shenandoah Valley Railroad gave its new passenger station the name Elkton, after the Elk Run stream, and an Elkton post office opened that January. The town was incorporated on March 14, 1908, and it marked its 100th anniversary in 2008.

  • Spotswood's 1716 crossingIn 1716 Governor Spotswood led his well-known expedition over the Blue Ridge, most likely through Swift Run Gap. The county history says he found a land of "seek-no-farther" in the wide river plains around or just above the place where Elkton now stands.
  • Adam Miller's lithia springAdam Miller, a German immigrant, was among the first Europeans to settle for good in the area. In 1741 he bought 820 acres near Elkton, including a large lithia spring, and stayed there the rest of his life. He sold 280 acres to Jacob Baer, and the spring, two miles below town, still carries the name Bear Lithia Spring.
  • Stonewall Jackson's headquartersThe Miller-Kite House on Rockingham Street served as General Stonewall Jackson's headquarters at the start of his Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Today it's a town museum holding Civil War items and some of Jackson's own belongings, and a cardboard figure of the general looks down on the street from a second-floor window.
  • From hospital to Town HallDr. Samuel B. Jennings built the Jennings House in 1840, and during the Civil War it became a hospital. It later held the town government until the summer of 2016, when the offices and police moved to the Elkton Area Community Center. After a restoration of nearly 8 months, it reopened as Elkton Town Hall on December 11, 2020.
  • Field Day since 1908Every early July since 1908, Elkton has held Field Day, a carnival with rides, yard sales, bluegrass and fireworks. Its best-known contest sends climbers up a 25 foot pole coated in hand soap to grab prize money at the top. It is sponsored by Elkton's Junior Order of the United American Mechanics.
