About Ellington, New York

Joshua Bentley was the first settler in Ellington. He bought part of lot 7 in 1814 and added more land the following year. Sawmills gave work to many early townsfolk. One sawmill near the end of Mill Street ran from the 1800s into the early 2000s.

On August 2, 1979, Twenty-eighth Creek flooded Ellington. The water wiped out a trailer park above town, then poured through the center. About 40 homes, the Baptist Church and the old town hall were damaged. Town records swept from the hall were found a third of a mile away. Damage reached about one million dollars.
