About Elliott, Maryland
Elliott is a small community in southern Dorchester County, on Elliott Island along the east side of Fishing Bay, near Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. A single road, Elliott Island Road, ties it to the rest of Maryland, running 19 miles northeast to U.S. Route 50 at Vienna.
A county history published in 1902 described Elliott's and Clay Islands as high sandy hills rising from wide stretches of low marsh south of Fishing Bay. People were living on that high ground long before the village took shape, and its church still stands as the village's leading landmark.
- Indian shell banksElias Jones, writing his history of Dorchester County in 1902, reported signs that Indians had lived on the island, probably the Nantiquacks or Wiwashes. For generations they ate oysters from the bay, and arrowheads still turned up around the banks of old shells they left behind.
- A church built 1891 to 1905The Elliott Methodist Episcopal Church went up in stages between 1891 and 1905 in the Gothic Revival style. A 2018 Maryland Historical Trust survey named it the most dominant historic structure left in the village, with its Victorian finishes still intact inside and out.
