About Elwin, Illinois

Elwin is a community of 119 people in South Wheatland Township, Macon County, about 5 miles south of Decatur, the county seat. It got its start in 1859 on land belonging to William Martin and Daniel H. Elwood. The two men had the town platted once the Illinois Central Railroad was finished through this part of the county, so Elwin grew up as a stop on the new line.

Because it sits at the center of South Wheatland Township, the community was once known as South Wheatland. It stayed unincorporated, and the Census Bureau listed it as a census-designated place for the first time in 2020. Its children attend schools in the Meridian Community Unit School District 15, including Meridian High School.

  • Named for its foundersThe name Elwin blends the surnames of the two landowners who started the town in 1859, Daniel H. Elwood and William Martin.
  • Laid out on the Illinois CentralThe 1880 History of Macon County places Elwin on the Illinois Central and says the town was platted soon after the railroad was completed.
  • Old Route 51 runs through townU.S. Route 51 now passes Elwin on its east side. Its old path ran straight through the middle of the community as U.S. Route 51 Business until that route was decommissioned in 2011. South of Elwin the two roads meet and continue 30 miles south to Pana.
  • On the Spring Creek watershedElwin covers 0.83 square miles, all of it land. Its water drains to Spring Creek, which runs north to the Sangamon River in Decatur.
