About Emmitsburg, Maryland

Emmitsburg is a town of 2,770 people in Frederick County, just 0.3 miles south of the Mason-Dixon line at the foot of Catoctin Mountain. Settlers lived here before the town existed, at a place first called Silver Fancy and later Poplar Fields. Their growth was slow because the British held back colonial expansion while the French and Indian War went on and in the years that followed. In 1785 William Emmit founded the town, and it took his name.

In June 1863 Union troops dug in at Emmitsburg to block the Confederate advance into the North. On the night of June 23, a fire nobody could explain burned half the town to the ground. Local folklore says a Union sympathizer set it so the advancing Confederates couldn't take the town's supplies. The armies never fought here. They met 12 miles north, near Gettysburg, and the retreating Confederates briefly held Emmitsburg on July 4.

  • A shared church from 1757In 1757 a Lutheran congregation under pastor George Bager put up a church here, and German Reformed worshippers shared the building until 1798. Later, so many Methodists lived in Emmitsburg that they formed a circuit around the town instead of sharing a minister with Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Father Dubois's missionAfter the Revolutionary War, the Catholic missionary Rev. Jean Dubois started a mission church at Emmitsburg and then a seminary. Mount St. Mary's University stands close to town today, and the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a Catholic pilgrimage site, is on its grounds.
  • Mother Seton's school, 1809Elizabeth Ann Seton opened a girls' academy here in 1809 and went on to set up a convent with a school and a hospital. She became the first saint born in the United States. Her basilica and national shrine stand inside the town limits and rank among the top eight Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the country.
  • Home of the National Fire AcademyThe National Emergency Training Center now occupies the old campus of Saint Joseph College. It holds the National Fire Academy, the Emergency Management Institute and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
