About Erwin, New York
Erwin is a town of 8,090 people in Steuben County, just west of the city of Corning. Settlers put down permanent roots here around 1786, and the name Erwin already appeared in the first United States census in 1790. The town itself was created in 1826, when it was split off from the old Town of Painted Post, known today as the town of Corning.
Erwin's borders shifted twice in the decades that followed. In 1837 part of its land was taken to create the town of Lindley, and in 1856 Erwin grew again when it gained a piece of the town of Corning.
- Named for its first supervisorErwin takes its name from one of its early settlers. That same man later served the new town as its first Town Supervisor.
- Where three rivers meetNear the village of Painted Post, the Tioga River joins the Cohocton River, and together they become the Chemung River, which flows east. Close by, near the hamlet of Erwins, the Canisteo River empties into the Tioga.
- The puzzle of the painted postThe village of Painted Post, inside the town, shares its name with a wooden post discovered in the southern part of Steuben County. People still argue over who put the post there and what it was meant for.
