About Euclid, Ohio
Euclid is a city of 49,692 people in Cuyahoga County, on the south shore of Lake Erie at the eastern edge of Cleveland. Euclid Township first appeared on a map in 1796, and it took its name from Euclid of Alexandria, the Greek mathematician. A handful of settlers arrived in 1798, but the real wave came in the spring of 1804. Chloe and Joseph Burke, Mary and David Dille, and Jamima and William Coleman brought the first families to what is now the city.
After the Civil War, the flat land near the lake became known for its fine vineyards. In 1903 the northeast part of the township split off and incorporated as Euclid Village. Factories soon followed, and the village grew into an industrial center before it became a city in 1930.
- A Supreme Court winBy 1922 Cleveland's Ambler Realty Company had 68 acres here between Euclid Avenue and the Nickel Plate tracks, and it planned to build industry there. The village council answered with a zoning code modeled on New York City's rules. Ambler sued, arguing the code cut its land's value, with former Cleveland mayor Newton D. Baker as its lawyer. In 1926 the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Euclid, and towns nationwide began writing zoning laws of their own.
- Engines, then Fisher BodyThe disputed Ambler land did become a factory site. During World War II the government put up a plant there to build aircraft engines and landing gear, and from 1948 to 1992 General Motors ran it for its Fisher Body Division.
- Ohio's oldest Buddhist groupJapanese American Buddhists, just freed from World War II internment camps, settled around Cleveland in 1943 and 1944 and formed a group that has met without a break ever since, the oldest in Ohio. They first worshiped in members' homes, then bought a building on East 81st Street in 1955. The Hough riots badly damaged it in 1966, and two years later the Cleveland Buddhist Temple moved to East 214th Street in Euclid.
- Arc lamp and cordless phoneCharles F. Brush, who was born in Euclid, created his arc lamp here in 1876. Nearly a century later, in 1969, George Sweigert invented the cordless telephone in the city.
- Slovenian roots and polkaSlovenes became one of Euclid's largest ethnic groups, and streets such as Grdina, Drenik and Ljubljana carry their names. The National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame sits in the city too, and it follows that music back to the Slovenian songs where it began.
