About Fairbanks, Alaska
Fairbanks is a city of 32,515 people and the seat of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, on the Chena River in Alaska's Tanana Valley. In August 1901 Captain E. T. Barnette was riding the steamboat Lavelle Young toward Tanacross, where he planned to open a trading post. The boat ran aground in shallow water, so the crew left him and his supplies on the bank of the Chena, 7 miles above the Tanana. Prospectors Felix Pedro and Tom Gilmore saw the steamer's smoke, came down from the hills and convinced him the spot had promise.
Barnette opened his post there, and a gold strike nearby soon brought miners in by the hundreds. At the urging of James Wickersham, the camp was named in 1902 for Charles W. Fairbanks, an Indiana senator who later became vice president. In 1903 Wickersham moved the Third Division court here from Eagle, and that November residents voted to make Fairbanks a city. Barnette was elected its first mayor and set up telephone service, fire protection, sanitation rules, electricity and steam heat.
- Rails to the mines in 1905Miners wanted a line from the steamboat docks on the Chena to the gold camps in the hills, and the Tanana Mines Railroad began running in September 1905. Its engine had once been the Yukon Territory's first steam locomotive. Renamed the Tanana Valley Railroad in 1907, it was bought by the Alaska Railroad in 1917. President Warren G. Harding drove the last spike at Nenana in 1923, and the finished line ended at Fairbanks.
- The flood of 1967After record rain upstream, the Chena rose over its banks on August 14, 1967, and by morning nearly all of Fairbanks was under water. Out of that disaster came the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. Its 50-foot Moose Creek Dam and 8-mile spillway can send the Chena's water into the Tanana before it reaches the city.
- A camp 3,500 years oldAthabascan peoples have lived in this country for thousands of years. A dig on the University of Alaska Fairbanks grounds found a Native camp about 3,500 years old, used for seasonal hunting and fishing. Its arrowheads matched ones found in Asia, giving some of the first evidence that people reached North America over the Bering Strait land bridge.
- The Strawberry KingIn its early years the Tanana Valley was Alaska's main farming center. Paul J. Rickert came from Chena in 1904 and farmed much of what is now South Fairbanks until he died in 1938, and Harry Markley Badger grew strawberries along the road that now carries his name. Local farms came close to feeding the town in the 1920s but never fully did.
