About Fairborn, Ohio

Fairborn is a city of 34,510 people in Greene County, a suburb of Dayton. George Greiner built the first log cabin here in 1799, before Ohio became a state, as pioneers from Kentucky and Virginia pushed onto Shawnee land along the Mad River. The Shawnee sometimes raided the settlement and the settlers struck back, with both sides taking prisoners, though no massacres were recorded. The village of Fairfield was founded in 1816. Osborn followed in 1850 after it agreed to let a railroad through, something Fairfield had refused, and it took its name from E.F. Osborn, the railroad's superintendent.

The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 changed both villages. The region and the state formed a conservation district, and in the 1920s work began on Huffman Dam to hold back the Mad River. Osborn's people moved to land beside Fairfield and took their homes with them: mules and tractors hauled an estimated 200 houses in the early 1920s, and many still stand in the Historic Osborn District. Voters approved joining the two villages in 1949, the charter arrived on January 1, 1950, and Fairborn was incorporated as a city on August 1, 1950.

“Yonder lies a fair field. I see thousands of white men moving about in that beautiful fair field.”
Wikipedia
  • A name made of two townsThe name joins Fairfield and Osborn, and no other city in the world is called Fairborn. Fairfield's own name has two stories. One says it came from a Fairfield in England. The other says a local chief, possibly Shawnee, made peace with the settlement's leaders and traded prisoners, then told William Cozad what he saw from Reed's Hill.
  • Six times its size by 1970Wright-Patterson Air Force Base kept growing next door, and between 1950 and 1970 Fairborn grew to six times its population. It passed Xenia, the county seat, as the largest city in Greene County. Southwestern Portland Cement ran the city's biggest factory in those years, quarrying the Brassfield Formation where that rock comes to the surface.
  • Fairborn's private InterstateInterstate 675 was planned in the 1960s as an eastern bypass of Dayton. Its northernmost stretch, just east of Fairborn, went in during the early 1970s and stopped at N. Fairfield Road, exit 17, and for more than a decade nothing more was built, so people joked that Fairborn had a highway of its own. Dayton Mayor James H. McGee fought the road, warning it would pull business out to the suburbs, and the highway was finished by 1987.
  • Wright State UniversityWright State became an independent university in 1967 and grew from a handful of buildings into a major campus. It carries a Dayton mailing address, but the campus lies within Fairborn's jurisdiction, and the university runs its own police force.
  • Sweet corn every AugustFairborn holds a Sweet Corn Festival each August, and the USAF marathon runs through each September. The city also turns out every year for a Fourth of July parade.
