About Fairmont, Nebraska

Fairmont is a village of 592 people in Fillmore County. Surveyors laid out the town in 1871, as the Burlington & Quincy Railroad pushed its tracks west to the site, and the new stop filled in quickly. By the fall of 1872 the young town had a school building, hotels and a growing row of stores, and lumberyards and coal and feed yards were going up beside them.

“When the town site was selected, it was a naked and unbroken prairie, but now it is finely ornamented with a large growth of forest and shade trees, which gives the residence portion of the town the appearance of having been built in the midst of one large grove.”
Andreas' History of Nebraska, 1882
  • Named in alphabetical orderTowns on the new Burlington line heading west from Lincoln got names in alphabetical order: Berks, Crete, Dorchester and Exeter came first, then Fairmont, followed by Grafton and Huxley. The F name picked for this stop also describes its setting, a scenic spot on high ground.
  • Three newspapers by 1881The Fairmont Bulletin, the town's first newspaper, began printing in 1872. Two more papers, the Nebraska Bulletin and the Nebraska Signal, had started by 1881, so the small town then had three of its own.
  • Fairmont Creamery, 1884The Fairmont Creamery started here in 1884 and later grew into Fairmont Foods. In its early years it led the way in picking up milk cans from farms, and it was one of the earliest creameries to supply hand cream separators to the farmers who sold it milk. The company shifted its corporate offices to Omaha in 1907, and its building in Fairmont, the Fairmont Creamery Company Building, joined the National Register in 1983.
