About Fairport, Iowa
Fairport was once called Jug Town because of its pottery works. Around 1869, John Feustel, a German immigrant, began making pottery here. The nickname lasted about 40 years. Pottery is no longer made in Fairport.
Pottery was once Fairport's leading industry. By 1911, the town's main interest was its great clam and mussel hatcheries. The United States government had recently built them there. Several residents also fished for clams for a living.
- The first potter of Jug TownPotter's clay near Fairport made potteries both possible and profitable. Elijah Sells started the trade there early on. Sells served three terms as Secretary of State, from 1856 to 1863.
