About Falcon Heights, Minnesota

Falcon Heights is a city of 5,369 people in Ramsey County, a suburb of Saint Paul. By the 1880s the Minnesota State Agricultural Society wanted a permanent home for its fair, so in 1885 Ramsey County gave it land from the county poor farm, and the first fair on the new grounds opened that same year. During the 1930s Faulkner, a real estate agent, began building on land that belonged to a 3M executive, and in 1937 the first house in his Falcon Heights development was built.

In 1949 residents refused to be swallowed by either Roseville or St. Paul and chose to incorporate on their own. The village became official on April 1, 1949, and its new boundaries took in the state fairgrounds along with the university's golf course and test fields. Falcon Heights became a city in 1973, and two-thirds of its land is public, mostly belonging to the university and the fair.

  • "Big stick" at the fair, 1901On September 2, 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, then still part of St. Paul, and for the first time in public he used a proverb from Africa: "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Two weeks later the assassination of William McKinley made Roosevelt president, and the phrase became the heart of his Big Stick Diplomacy.
  • Lindbergh at Curtiss FieldFrom the 1910s into the 1930s, Curtiss Northwest Airport sat where Snelling and Larpenteur Avenues meet. It played a big part in Minnesota's early aviation, and its visitors included Charles Lindbergh, along with Speed Holman and Phoebe Fairgrave. Part of the old airfield is now a city park that keeps the name Curtiss Field.
  • Heman Gibbs's homesteadHeman Gibbs settled in the 1850s near what is now the corner of Cleveland and Larpenteur Avenues. The Heman Gibbs Farmstead joined the National Register in 1975, and his home is now a county museum, the Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life.
  • The university's St. Paul CampusThe University of Minnesota's St. Paul Campus lies in Falcon Heights, with the Goldstein Museum of Design, the Gabbert Raptor Center and Les Bolstad Golf Course. Close by stands University Grove, a neighborhood noted for its modern architecture.
