About Fallsburg, New York

Fallsburg is a town of 14,192 people in eastern Sullivan County, in the Catskill Mountains, and the Neversink River runs through it from north to south. In the late 1780s, settlers from Ulster County came for the cheap, fertile farmland in the river valley above its falls. By 1800 the upper reaches of the river were well settled, and sawmills and gristmills had gone up during the 1790s.

The New York State Legislature created the town on March 9, 1826, from pieces of Thompson and Neversink, and named it for the waterfall on the Neversink. The first town meeting followed on April 4, in a schoolhouse where Fallsburg hamlet stands today. Early farm families lived frugally because trade meant a hard trip across the mountains to Kingston, and mail from there could take 90 days. That changed in 1828, when the Delaware and Hudson Canal opened and Ellenville became the closest market.

  • Hasbrouck came firstBefore the canal, Hasbrouck was the main settlement in the area, and the flat land along the upper Neversink between Woodbourne and Hasbrouck drew the most settlers. The hamlet remained a busy place of business for many years, with shops, stores and a post office of its own from 1846 to 1923.
  • Laughs in the Borscht BeltFallsburg sits at the center of the Borscht Belt, the summer resort area that drew mostly Jewish vacationers to the Catskills. Woody Allen, Rodney Dangerfield, Jerry Seinfeld, Henny Youngman and Joan Rivers performed here. A young Jerry Lewis bused tables while his parents did a vaudeville act, and he clowned for the diners as he worked, sharpening his act and earning bigger tips.
  • Champions in trainingHeavyweight champions came to the Fallsburg area to get ready for their fights. Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johansson and Leon Spinks all trained here.
  • Francis Currey DayFrancis S. Currey grew up on a dairy farm in Hurleyville and served in the U.S. Army in World War II, where his bravery earned him the Medal of Honor. Each year the town holds Francis Currey Day to honor him and its other military veterans.
