About Falmouth, Pennsylvania

Falmouth began in 1791 at the mouth of Conewago Creek. John Bayly planned it with his son Thomas and two sons-in-law. With partner James Hopkins, they platted a townsite. The partners sold 146 lots by lottery, for ten pounds each.

In 1810 the state chartered a turnpike company, and John Greer was its main contractor. A canal around the falls then took all the river trade away from Falmouth. The company abandoned the road. Grass grew on its bed, and now and then a pumpkin vine crept across it. People called it the Pumpkin-vine turnpike. As settlers filled the area, the old road became a great convenience.
