About Farmville, North Carolina

Farmville is a town of 4,461 people in Pitt County, eight miles west of Greenville. It was established in February 1872, and it got its name because nearly every business and activity in the young town had to do with farming. Growth came slowly at first, and the 1880 census found only 111 people living in Farmville.

Farmers in Pitt County and around Farmville started growing tobacco in the 1890s. The new crop helped bring the East Carolina Railway to town in 1900, and the railroad set off an economic boom. Most of the buildings in downtown Farmville went up in the years soon after the trains arrived.

“Born in Farmville in 1891, Allen Hal Turnage was a career officer in the United States Marine Corps. In 1943, at the height of World War II, he was promoted to the rank of major general and assumed command of the newly organized Third Marine Division.”

  • Two founding fathersJames Williams May, a grandson of Major Benjamin May, was one of the commissioners named in the town's first charter. He gave land for churches and put his own money and work into local business. William Gray Lang served more than 10 years as a town commissioner and sat on the executive committee that set up Farmville's tobacco market.
  • Marlborough on the Plank RoadIn 1880 a separate settlement called Marlborough, with 79 people, stood near Farmville along the wooden Historic Plank Road. It was never incorporated, and over time the town grew around it, so Marlborough now lies inside Farmville's town limits.
  • The Dogwood FestivalThe town government works with local nonprofit groups to put on the Farmville Dogwood Festival each year, along with the Christmas Parade, the Independence Day Celebration, A Taste of Farmville and the Holiday Open House. Farmville PorchFest joined the calendar in September 2026, and the town has been a Tree City USA community for 36 years.
