This vintage photograph, captured by Frances Benjamin Johnston, features a historical building located in Farnham, Richmond County, Virginia. The structure dates back to approximately 1737 and was originally utilized as a church. After its abandonment around 1800, it served various purposes including a storehouse, distillery, and stable during the Civil War. Despite restoration efforts, the building unfortunately burned down in 1888.
The image showcases distinctive architectural elements such as bulls eye windows, fanlights, and cornices, reflective of the colonial style prevalent in Virginia. This photograph is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, an extensive documentation of Southern architecture, and was later published in Henry Irving Brocks Colonial Churches in Virginia in 1930.
