About Faywood, New Mexico
Faywood is a community of 33 people in Grant County, New Mexico, and it grew up around a set of hot springs. Visitors came to soak in the water as early as 1859, and by 1900 a small settlement had formed beside the resort. Three developers were running Faywood Hot Springs by then, and the town carries the names of two of them.
“For years the resort was an important social center. People would come from far and wide to dance all night at Faywood, eat breakfast at the crack of dawn in the placita, and many were reputed to ride home on their horses asleep in the saddle.”
- Hot baths since 1859William Watts put up a hotel and a bath house at the springs in 1859. His buildings began a long run of visitors who traveled here for the warm water.
- Named for Fay and LockwoodThe settlement that formed by 1900 took its name from J.C. Fay and William Lockwood, two of the men who developed Faywood Hot Springs. T.C. McDermott was the third partner in the venture.
- A post office at DwyerFaywood's post office later moved northeast to Dwyer. It kept the old name, so mail there still goes to the Faywood Post Office, ZIP code 88034.
