About Federalsburg, Maryland

Federalsburg is a town of 2,833 people in Caroline County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The old county history files it under an earlier name, North West Fork Bridge. One account says the Federalist Party held a meeting here in 1812 and the town took its name from that party, then was incorporated in 1823. A 1905 source gives another reason: the first settlers had come from northern states.

For years the town sat right on the line between Dorchester and Caroline counties, and that split caused constant trouble. Early in 1880 every one of the seventy voters in the area asked the Maryland General Assembly to move the line. A new survey followed the North-west fork of the Nanticoke River and Miles' Run, and the land between the old and new lines became part of Caroline County. When the voters there were counted, all but one favored the change.

  • A newspaper since 1872The first issue of the paper later known as the Federalsburg Courier came out on February 7, 1872. The town also had a print shop, J. W. Stowell Printing, which printed The History of Caroline County. Teachers and schoolchildren from across the county gathered much of that book's material.
  • Home of the Federalsburg A'sFederalsburg had its own minor league baseball team, the Federalsburg A's, which fed players to the Philadelphia Athletics. The team played its home games at Federal Park.
  • Chicken Festival host in 2007Marshy Hope Marina Park was the setting in 2007 when Federalsburg welcomed the 58th Delmarva Chicken Festival. It was the second time the festival had come to Federalsburg.
