About Fenton, New York
Fenton is a town of 6,441 people in Broome County, northeast of Binghamton, with the Chenango River along its western edge. Settlers first came to the area around 1788. In 1855 the town of Port Crane was split off from Chenango, and in 1867 a bigger town was created and named Fenton, for New York governor Reuben Fenton. Port Crane lived on as a hamlet within it.
The Chenango Canal, open from 1834 to 1876, ran up the west side of the town beside the Chenango River, and Fenton grew and did well because of it. Railroads later took the canal's place, but the tracks passed the town by. Once the canal closed, the good times in Port Crane ended with it.
- A port named for an engineerPort Crane, close to the southern edge of the town beside the Chenango River, was a port on the Chenango Canal. It took its name from Jason Crane, an engineer who worked on the canal.
- Once Ketchums CornersNorth Fenton, the hamlet where Routes 79 and 369 meet near the Chenango County line, first went by the name Ketchums Corners.
- Chenango Valley State ParkThe state park lies beside the Chenango River and is known for its wooded golf course and land shaped by glaciers. Its two lakes are Chenango Lake, the larger one, where people swim and boat, and Lily Lake to the north, prized for its beauty and its fishing.
- Billy Martin's lake homeAfter his playing and managing days, Yankees second baseman and manager Billy Martin settled in a large house on a private lake near Port Crane, with a private suite kept for Mickey Mantle's visits. On Christmas Day in 1989, Martin died in a car crash on that same road, only a few feet from his own driveway.
