About Fieldale, Virginia
Planter George Waller settled at a protected crossing on the Smith River in 1770. His wife, Ann, was a first cousin of Patrick Henry. For more than a hundred years the place was known as Waller's Ford. Marshall Field and Company bought the land in 1916. By 1919 it had built Fieldcrest Mills and a new town, Fieldale.
Marshall Field and Company built an 8,500 square foot clubhouse for the new town. The Fieldale Historic District, the company clubhouse and Virginia Home are now on the National Register of Historic Places.
