This restored linen postcard shows the first monument to George Washington, the sturdy stone tower that rises from South Mountain near U.S. 40 above Boonsboro, Maryland. Local citizens raised it in 1827, gathering on the Fourth of July to build the original rugged stone shaft in honor of the first president , a heartfelt early tribute that still crowns the ridge in what is now Washington Monument State Park.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, American travelers carried home "linen" postcards prized for their soft textured finish and bright, inviting colors. This one comes from the Tichnor Brothers Collection, published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, a defining name of that golden age. KNOWOL has carefully restored and color-revived this edition so its detail and warmth shine once more.
