About Flat Rock, Michigan

Flat Rock is a city of 10,541 people in Wayne County, with a small corner reaching into Monroe County across the Huron River. It began as a Wyandot settlement, and the land was still a Wyandot reservation in 1830. In 1798 a French priest, Father Jean Dilhet, listed a settlement called "Grosse Roche" in his parish. The name came from the limestone outcrop on the south bank of the river.

Michael Vreeland had been captured by British Rangers in the Revolutionary War and freed once the war was won. Between 1811 and 1820 he came here with his five grown sons, and the family bought 800 acres. They hauled millstones from New York and built the first grain and lumber mill, so the place became known as the Village of Vreeland. After the Erie Canal opened in 1825, settlers poured in from New York. By 1828 the village had 250 people, four stores, two sawmills, a flour mill and a wool carding mill, and it served the farms around it.

“According to local tradition the Munger establishments were a stagecoach stop, and the store had the first public telephone between Detroit and Toledo.”

  • Platted as Flat Rock in 1838In 1838 the Vreelands sold most of their land and gave up control of the town. That same year the Gibraltar and Flat Rock Land Co. platted and recorded the village of Flat Rock, hoping to dig a canal from Lake Erie to Lake Michigan. The canal plan failed. Flat Rock was incorporated as a village in 1923 and became a city in 1965.
  • Henry Ford's lamp factoryHenry Ford was drawn to the water power of the Huron River. In 1925 Ford Motor Company opened its Lamp Factory on the riverbank, and the Flat Rock Dam was built to make hydroelectric power for the plant.
  • The river's 1923 county lineThe line between Wayne and Monroe counties follows the Huron River as it ran in 1923, the year Flat Rock became a village. The river had two meanders then. They have since been filled in, which left a small part of the city on the Monroe County side.
  • Seven generations of VreelandsThe family that founded the town never left. Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in Flat Rock, and their children attend the Flat Rock public schools as the seventh generation of the family in the town.
