About Flatonia, Texas

Flatonia is a town in southwestern Fayette County, where U.S. Highway 90 meets State Highway 95 and Interstate 10 crosses the northern side. Founded beside the railroad in 1874, it drew residents from earlier settlements and later welcomed several immigrant communities. Cotton, cattle, transportation, and local festivals have each shaped its history.

  • Railroad FoundingThe Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway established Flatonia on April 8, 1874, and named it for pioneer merchant F. W. Flato.
  • Homes Moved by WagonResidents of old Flatonia and Oso transported their homes and businesses by wagon to the new settlement beside the tracks.
  • Immigrant CommunitiesRail access and affordable land attracted successive waves of German, Bohemian, Greek, Arabian, and Italian immigrants.
  • Czhilispiel TraditionThe weekend-long Czhilispiel, whose name reflects Czech and German enthusiasm for chili, draws visitors from a broad area of Central Texas each year.
  • 2020 PopulationThe 2020 census recorded 1,308 residents in Flatonia.
