About Foley, Minnesota

Foley is a city of 2,711 people and the county seat of Benton County, part of the St. Cloud metropolitan area. Minnesota State Highways 23 and 25 are its main routes. The village began as a railroad camp when the Great Northern Railway built its line through here in 1882-4, and in 1902 it took the county offices away from Sauk Rapids.

  • Named for John FoleyJohn Foley was one of five brothers who moved to Minnesota from Lanark County, Ontario. He and several of his brothers worked as contractors building the Great Northern line, and their crews camped on the ground where the village now stands. John bought land at the camp, and the village that grew there took his name.
  • County seat since 1902Sauk Rapids had held Benton County's government since the county was organized in 1850. In 1901-02 John Foley led a campaign to bring the county seat to his village, and it succeeded: the county offices moved to Foley in 1902. Foley died in St. Paul on August 11, 1908.
  • The Benton County NewsFoley is home to the Benton County News, a weekly newspaper owned by Star Publications. It comes out every Tuesday.
