From the North Carolina Gazetteer: "Forest City town in S central Rutherford County. Alt. 869. Inc. 1877 as Burnt Chimney; name changed to Forest City in 1887 in honor of Forest Davis, lumber merchant."
From the Essays on North Carolina History: "Forest City, as a political unit, had its beginning in 1877 when the community was incorporated as Burnt Chimney. As a settled community it had its inception many years earlier."
