About Forest Hills, Michigan

Forest Hills is an unincorporated community in Kent County, about 6 miles east of East Grand Rapids. It takes in almost all of Ada Township and much of the northern half of Cascade Township, and the Grand River cuts across it from the east side to the northwest corner.

The river once marked the line between two new townships. On April 3, 1848, the state legislature set off Ada on the north bank of the Grand River and Cascade on the south. Cascade held its first town meeting soon after, at the public house kept by Zerah Whitney.

  • A covered bridge from about 1867In 1867 the legislature allowed Ada Township to borrow as much as three thousand dollars for bridges, and the Ada Covered Bridge over the Thornapple River at Bronson Street went up around then, apparently built by William Holmes. Floods threatened it often, and the story goes that farmers parked stone-laden wagons on its deck to hold it down.
  • Cascade's town hall, 1898Fifty years after its first town meeting in Zerah Whitney's public house, Cascade Township built a frame township hall in 1898. When the state put up a marker for it in 1998, the hall was a rare surviving example of a well-kept nineteenth century frame town hall.
  • Michigan's biggest CDPAt the 2020 census Forest Hills counted 28,573 people, more than any other census-designated place in Michigan, and no CDP in the state covers more ground. Of its 50.80 square miles, 49.27 are land and 1.53 are water.
