About Forestburg, South Dakota

Forestburg is an unincorporated town of 54 people in Sanborn County, South Dakota. It took its name from a tract of forest that stood near the spot where the town was first laid out. Today the small community is best known around the state for one crop, the watermelon.

“For thousands of Midwesterners, the traditional end-of-summer excursion to the state fair wouldn’t be complete without a stop at a Forestburg watermelon stand.”
South Dakota Magazine, 2014
  • South Dakota's watermelon capitalForestburg has claimed the title of watermelon capital of South Dakota. When South Dakota Magazine wrote about the town in 2014, no other place had come forward to dispute it.
  • Named for a forestThe town's name comes from a tract of forest near its original site, a stand of trees that settlers noticed on the prairie and that gave the new community its identity.
  • Its own schools until 1981Forestburg once ran its own schools as the Forestburg 55-2 School District. In 1981 the district stopped holding classes and began paying other districts to teach its children, and a year later, in 1982, it dissolved. Students now go to schools in the Sanborn Central School District, including Sanborn Central High School.
