About Fort Garland, Colorado

Fort Garland is a community of 464 people in Costilla County, in Colorado's San Luis Valley. The U.S. Army founded the post in June 1858, and its job was to guard white settlers against the Ute people. At the time, the valley still belonged to the New Mexico Territory, and the new fort replaced the older Fort Massachusetts.

Colorado Territory was organized on February 28, 1861, and a post office named Fort Garland, Colorado Territory, opened on February 25, 1862. The army stayed for twenty-five years. It left in 1883, after the tribes had been confined to reservations in Utah Territory and Colorado. Today the Fort Garland Museum keeps some of the old fort's buildings standing.

“The army quickly picked a valley location right on the trails coming over Sangre de Cristo Pass and La Veta Pass, with clear views in all directions, and built a new fort, called Fort Garland.”
