About Fort Meade, Florida

Fort Meade is a city of 5,100 people in Polk County, and it is known as the county's oldest city. After the Second Seminole War, the Army laid out a military road between Fort Brooke in Tampa and Fort Pierce, and in 1849 it founded a post along that route. Stonewall Jackson, later a Confederate general, served at the fort in 1851. Around the time the Civil War began, a mounted volunteer company nicknamed the "Hickory Boys" formed there.

Union troops burned the town in 1864 and destroyed every original building except the second fort, which was taken apart in the 1890s. By the 1880s the town's stores lined Wire Street, now Broadway, and four devastating fires swept through that business district. During the 1890s, horse-drawn cars of the Fort Meade Street Railway took passengers through town.

  • Named for George MeadeGeorge Meade, a young Army engineer lieutenant, picked the sites for both the road and the post, and his commander gave the post Meade's name. During the Civil War, Meade led the Union's Army of the Potomac and beat Robert E. Lee's army at Gettysburg in 1863.
  • Christ Church, built in 1889Episcopalians built Christ Church at 1 North Cleveland Avenue in 1889. Architect J. H. Weddell designed the frame building with Gothic Revival details. In 1990 HBO filmed its movie Judgment at the church, with Blythe Danner, Keith Carradine and Jack Warden in the cast.
  • A library from donated booksIn 1934 the Fort Meade Woman's Club filled a vacant room at 212 West Broadway, lent free by Ben Johnson, with donated books and opened a library. It later moved to city hall, then to 75 East Broadway, the Chamber of Commerce's old building. When state funding failed, the city voted unanimously to take it over, and Mrs. Codey Shirley took charge on May 1, 1965. It was the first member of the Polk County Library Cooperative.
  • Florida's second Blueway cityOn 16th-century Spanish charts, the Peace River was Rio de la Paz. It passes Fort Meade on a 76-mile course that ends at Charlotte Harbor. On July 20, 2011, the Florida Paddlers Association made Fort Meade the second city in Florida named a Blueway community. Paddlers launch kayaks and canoes from the Fort Meade Outdoor Recreation Area, which hosts the yearly Peace River Paddle.
  • A National League MVPAndrew McCutchen was born in Fort Meade and made the Fort Meade High School varsity baseball team while he was still in eighth grade. In 2013, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won the National League's Most Valuable Player award.
