About Fortescue, New Jersey
In 1901 Fortescue was a summer resort on Delaware Bay. Its population swelled to between 500 and 1,000 in the summer months. The rest of the year only a few caretakers stayed. About one hundred cottages and boarding houses served the fishermen who came from May to October.
Fortescue was named for John Fortescue, who owned property here around the time of American independence. In the late 1970s and mid-1980s, anglers caught huge numbers of weakfish each summer. The town called itself the weakfish capital of the world. Overfishing followed, and by 1990 the fish population had crashed.
