About Franklin Township, Lenawee County, Michigan
Franklin Township is a civil township of 3,063 people in Lenawee County, Michigan, and it takes its name from Benjamin Franklin. The Rev. Henry Tripp founded its main village in 1831 and gave it Franklin's name too, calling it Franklin Center. Three years later the settlement got its own mail service, and William Camburn became its first postmaster when the post office opened on June 6, 1834.
- From Franklin Center to TiptonThe village Henry Tripp started did not keep its first name. People renamed it Tripp Town, for its founder, and in time that name was cut down to Tipton. The village sits where M-50 crosses Tipton Highway, and its name now covers most of the township through the Tipton ZIP code.
- A log tavern on Evans LakeHenry W. Sisson came from New York and settled here in 1834. He put up a log tavern beside Evans Lake, at the point where the Chicago Road meets the Irish Hills, giving travelers a place to stop. Decades later, from 1890 until 1900, Evans Lake had a post office of its own.
