From the Fortier's Louisiana: "Franklin, the parish seat of St. Mary parish, is one of the old towns of southern Louisiana. It was laid out in the year 1800 by Guinea Lewis, a Quaker from Pennsylvania, a great admirer of Benjamin Franklin, in whose honor the town was named."
