About Franklin, Franklin County, New York

The first settlement here was Franklin Falls, begun in 1827, which burned in 1852. The town itself was formed from Bellmont in 1836. Franklin became a new home for people freed from slavery. Abolitionist Gerrit Smith helped, and Civil War veterans also invited freed people to come home with them.
