About Franktown, Virginia

Franktown is a community of 61 people in Northampton County, on Virginia's Eastern Shore. It grew up at the head of Warehouse Creek, close to a tobacco warehouse on Wellington Neck, and in the mid-19th century it was a stop for stagecoaches running between Wilmington, Delaware and Eastville.

  • Frank's Towne, 1764Frank Andrews opened a store here in 1764, and people soon began calling the community Frank's Towne.
  • A post office in 1840Franktown gained official standing in 1840, when it got its own post office. At that time only 13 post offices served the whole Eastern Shore. Because the village sat on the bayside stagecoach route, it became a busy center of trade and travel.
  • Arthur Crudup's last homeThe blues musician Arthur Crudup seldom saw royalties for his songs, so he supported his family with labor and farm work. Around 1960 he moved to Franktown. He toured abroad and formed The Malibus with his sons James, George and Jonas, playing in Weirwood and Nassawadox, and he is buried in Franktown.
  • Before Turkey Point LightIn the 1920s Fannie Salter and her husband made their home in Franktown for a while, and their son Charles Bradley was born here. The family then left for Turkey Point Light in Maryland.
