About French Camp, California
French Camp is a community of 3,770 people in San Joaquin County, at the southern tip of French Camp Slough in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. From about 1832 to 1845, French-Canadian trappers working for the Hudson's Bay Company ended their Oregon-California Trail journey here, and Michel La Framboise was among the men who came each year to meet the hunters camped with their families.
Spanish Californians called the place Campo de los Franceses, and a land grant dated January 13, 1844, kept that name as Rancho Campo de los Franceses. That same year Charles M. Weber and William Gulnac promoted a colony of settlers on the ranch, which covered both French Camp and the ground where Stockton would grow.
- Castoria, the name that fadedWeber's townsite, laid out in 1850, got the name Castoria, from castor, the word for beaver, after the fur trade that made the camp. Local people went on calling it French Camp anyway, and in 1859 the post office took that name.
- Oldest in San Joaquin CountyLa Framboise set up his headquarters here in 1832, and it became the southernmost regular camp of the Hudson's Bay Company's southern fur brigades, which set out from Fort Vancouver, now Vancouver, Washington. French Camp is the oldest settlement in San Joaquin County, and the state marks it as California Historical Landmark No. 668.
- The road that stayed dryThe camp sat where the delta's southernmost slough ended, so trappers could move by water. A trail ran southeast from here into the Sierra Nevada foothills. Travelers on the Mariposa Road, a stretch of the Stockton-Los Angeles Road, later used it as a second route, mostly in the rainy season, because its ground drained so well. It was paved over time and is French Camp Road today.
- Letters from the grammar schoolDuring World War II, under Executive Order 9066, Japanese American families living in French Camp were forced to leave. They were taken to the Turlock Assembly Center, set up at the Stanislaus County Fair, and to the Manzanar and Gila River War Relocation Centers. Letters written by former students of the French Camp Grammar School tell of the move and of life in the camps.
