About Frisco, Colorado

Frisco is a town of 2,913 people in Summit County, within easy reach of four major ski resorts: Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin. Henry Recen founded the town in 1873, and it was chartered in 1879, the year the Colorado Silver Boom began and gave the young settlement its reason to grow. Frisco was incorporated on December 3, 1880.

The name has nothing to do with San Francisco, California. The founders borrowed it from the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, which people called the Frisco, because they hoped the name would draw the rail line to their town. Frisco, Texas, took its name from the same railroad.

  • On the shore of Lake DillonFrisco sits along Lake Dillon, a reservoir built between 1961 and 1963. Its waters now cover the original town of Dillon, and the new town of Dillon, Silverthorne and Keystone lie across the lake to the east.
  • One of two telephonesEarly in the twentieth century, Wildhack's Grocery Store held one of only two telephones in Frisco, so townspeople came there to leave and pick up messages and news. The building, Wildhack's Grocery Store-Post Office, joined the National Register in 1985.
  • Colorado's first BBQ challengeFrisco hosted the first official state BBQ challenge in 1993. It became a yearly event that raised money for nonprofits, more than $500,000 in the fifteen years up to 2012. The challenge moved to Copper Mountain in 2023, and the event is ending.
  • A sister city in JapanFrisco has been paired with Nishikawa, in Yamagata, Japan, since August 29, 1990.
