About Fulton, Oswego County, New York

The city takes its name from Robert Fulton, who invented the steamboat. Fulton was where Peter Cailer Kohler opened the first chocolate plant in the United States. Swiss workers skilled in candy making followed and settled in town. The Nestle Crunch bar was created there in 1938.

In 2003, Nestle shut the plant after more than a century, saying the old building cost too much to update. Four hundred local workers lost their jobs. Employees flew the company flag upside down on the day of the announcement.

  • A mill town that held steadyIn the early 1930s, the New York Sun wrote a long story about the city's sturdy economy. Its headline named Fulton the city the Great Depression missed.
