About Fulton, Illinois

Fulton is a city of 3,647 people in Whiteside County, set on the Mississippi River opposite Clinton, Iowa, near Lock and Dam #13. Its first building was a small cabin of hewn logs on the riverbank, a little north of the spot where the Bachelders pottery stood when the county history was written. A post office called Fulton opened in 1838 and has run ever since, and the town took its name from Robert Fulton, the man who invented the steamboat.

  • De Immigrant windmillFulton takes pride in its Dutch heritage. A traditional Dutch windmill named De Immigrant stands beside the dike that guards the city from the Mississippi, and every year on the first weekend of May the town holds its Dutch Days festival.
  • Stone from the river bluffsNiagara limestone shows at the surface in Fulton on sections 21, 27 and 28. The county history praised it as easy to quarry and dress, good in color and durable, and the Fulton quarries were worked heavily for block stone used in building.
  • The Martin HouseThe Martin House is now the Martin House Museum, one of the places visitors come to see in Fulton along with Heritage Canyon and the view of the Mississippi. The house joined the National Register in 2014.
