About Gaffney, South Carolina

Gaffney is a city of 12,764 people and the seat of Cherokee County, in the Upstate region of South Carolina. Michael Robert Gaffney was born in 1775 in Granard, in County Longford, Ireland. He reached New York City in 1797 and moved to Charleston a few years later. In 1804 he went up to the Upcountry and opened a tavern and lodging house where two main roads crossed. One road ran from the North Carolina mountains down to Charleston, and the other ran from Charlotte into Georgia.

The crossing came to be called Gaffney's Cross Roads, and Gaffney stayed there until his death on September 6, 1854. By 1872 the settlement was known as Gaffney City, and it was incorporated in 1875. In 1897 Cherokee County was formed from parts of York, Union and Spartanburg counties, and Gaffney became its seat. Textile mills carried the county's economy until the 1980s. Later, uptown Gaffney slowed as new industry chose sites near Interstate 85.

  • The Peachoid water towerPeople call Gaffney the Peach Capital of South Carolina, and its water tower, the Peachoid, is shaped like a peach. Besides holding the town's water, the tower serves as public art. It showed up in several episodes of the Netflix series House of Cards, where the main character, Frank Underwood, was written as a Gaffney native who represented the town in Congress.
  • Harold's since 1932Harold Tindall opened Harold's Restaurant, a diner in downtown Gaffney's historic district, in 1932. In 2007 host Guy Fieri visited the diner, and it was featured on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
  • A museum on the militia groundFor more than a century, from 1812 to 1914, the South Carolina militia gathered to muster on a piece of ground in Gaffney. That site is now home to the Cherokee County History and Arts Museum, which opened there in 2008.
