About Gainesville, Georgia

Gainesville is a city of 42,296 people and the county seat of Hall County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. European-American settlers started it in the early 1800s as Mule Camp Springs. Hall County was organized on December 15, 1818, and on April 21, 1821, the settlement took the name Gainesville to honor General Edmund P. Gaines, a War of 1812 hero who also surveyed land and built roads for the army. On November 30, 1821, the Georgia General Assembly chartered it and made it the seat of the county.

A gold rush in neighboring Lumpkin County during the 1830s drew more settlers, and a business district began to form. Visitors came for the springs, and by 1849 Gainesville had become a resort town, but a fire in 1851 burned much of it. Growth returned after the Civil War. Trains on the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway began stopping here in 1871, and the town grew from 1,000 people in 1870 to over 5,000 by 1900.

  • Street lamps in 1902By 1898 textile mills drove the local economy, with trains hauling in raw cotton and carrying out the finished goods. The money from the mills paid for street lamps in 1902, and no city south of Baltimore had them before Gainesville. Free mail delivery followed in 1905, and the Jackson Building, the city's first high-rise, held its formal opening on December 22, 1915.
  • A $1.00 airport leaseIn 1943, during World War II, the city leased its airport to the U.S. government for $1.00, and the military trained pilots there as a naval air station. The field came back to Gainesville in 1947 with two new 4,000-foot landing strips. It is now Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.
  • Jesse Jewell's chickensAfter World War II, Gainesville feed salesman Jesse Jewell sold baby chicks and feed to North Georgia farmers on credit. Once the birds were grown, he bought the broilers back at a price that covered his costs and promised the farmers a profit. With enough farmers signed on, he built his own hatchery and processing plant. Chickens became Georgia's largest agricultural crop, and the city's main road, Jesse Jewell Parkway, carries his name.
  • The tornadoes of 1903 and 1936An F4 tornado struck Gainesville on June 1, 1903, and killed 98 people. In 1936 an even worse storm devastated the city and killed 203 people, making it the fifth deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
  • Olympic rowing on Lake LanierArmy engineers finished Buford Dam across the Chattahoochee River in 1956, and the water spread over the valley to form Lake Sidney Lanier, named for the Georgia poet and musician. Parts of Gainesville sit on its shore, and during the 1996 Summer Olympics the rowing and kayaking medal races were held on the lake here.
