About Galloway, New Jersey
Galloway is a township of 37,813 people in Atlantic County. Its land and water add up to 114.49 square miles, more than any other town in New Jersey. King George III created it by royal patent on April 4, 1774. It was cut from Egg Harbor Township while the land was still in Gloucester County. At first it took in what are now Atlantic City, Hammonton, Brigantine, Egg Harbor City, Port Republic, Mullica Township and the north end of Absecon.
The Lenape lived here when Europeans came. Most of the early colonial settlers were English. During the Revolution, the Battle of Chestnut Neck was fought in the township, on ground that is now part of Port Republic. On February 21, 1798, the state made Galloway one of its first 104 townships. In 1837 it joined the new Atlantic County.
- Five towns carved outOnce it joined Atlantic County, Galloway gave up land again and again. Mullica Township split off in 1838, Egg Harbor City in 1858, Absecon in 1872, Brigantine in 1890 and Port Republic in 1905.
- A name still debatedHistorians do not know for sure where the name came from. It may honor the Galloway region of southern Scotland. It may also honor Joseph Galloway, a Loyalist in the First Continental Congress in 1774 who opposed independence.
- A reserve named for CousteauThe Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve was dedicated in 1997. It is named for Jacques-Yves Cousteau. It protects pinelands, swamps, marshes and shallow bays where the Mullica River meets Great Bay. Rutgers runs it with partners such as Stockton University, which has its campus in Galloway.
- Home of the Forsythe refugeThe Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge is run from Galloway, where it keeps a visitor center. It guards tidal wetlands in Atlantic and Ocean counties. Each spring and fall, flocks of birds stop there on the Atlantic Flyway.
