About Gallup, New Mexico
Gallup is a city of 21,899 people and the county seat of McKinley County. It sits in the valley of the Puerco River, 20 miles east of the Arizona border. In 1879 two mining engineers came here for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to prospect for coal, and they found it in large deposits. Two years later, in 1881, the town was founded as a railhead on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. It took its name from David Gallup, who paid that railroad's workers.
The city lies on the edge of the Navajo reservation, and Navajo, Hopi and Zuni people make their homes here. Well over a third of its residents have Native American roots, which earned Gallup the nickname "Heart of Indian Country." In 2022 the city held its 100th annual Intertribal Celebration.
- Hollywood at the El RanchoIn the 1940s and 1950s, the rugged land around Gallup drew film crews shooting Westerns, and the actors stayed at the El Rancho Hotel. Its guests included John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Katharine Hepburn, Kirk Douglas and Gregory Peck. Pursued (1947), Ace in the Hole (1951) and The Hallelujah Trail (1965) were among the films made here. The hotel joined the National Register in 1988.
- A wartime story correctedMany people believe that during World War II Gallup fought off the internment of 800 Japanese American residents, and that it was the only city in New Mexico to win that fight. The record says otherwise. Executive Order 9066 was never applied to people living in Gallup, and the city followed every federal order and policy through the war.
- Manuelito Hall closes in 1973The Bureau of Indian Affairs ran Manuelito Hall in Gallup as a dormitory for Native American students who went to the Gallup-McKinley schools. About 300 students lived there in 1973. That year the bureau closed the hall and planned to send its students to boarding schools.
