About Gann Valley, South Dakota

Gann Valley is the county seat of Buffalo County. The 2020 census counted 10 people here, and no other unincorporated town in the country serves as a county seat with fewer residents. The town lies in the valley of Crow Creek, with the Crow Creek Reservation close by to the west.

Herst C. Gann founded the town in January 1885, and it still carries his name. He gave the building that became the courthouse, and A. L. Spencer gave thirty acres of land. Those two gifts won the new town the county seat.

  • Back as county seat in 1888In 1886 the county seat was moved away from Gann Valley to Buffalo Center. Two years later, in 1888, it returned to Gann Valley, which is still the county seat today.
  • 120 degrees in 1936On July 5, 1936, the thermometer at Gann Valley reached 120 degrees. It is the highest temperature ever recorded in South Dakota, and the record still belongs to Gann Valley.
  • The state's center of populationThe center of population of South Dakota falls in Gann Valley. That puts the middle of the whole state's population in one of its smallest towns.
  • The Dakota ChiefGann Valley had its own newspaper, The Dakota Chief, printed in the town for Buffalo County readers. The Library of Congress records its run as ending in 1913.
