About Garden City, Kansas

Garden City is a city of 28,151 people and the county seat of Finney County, just north of the Arkansas River. In February 1878 James R. Fulton, his brother William D. Fulton and William's son L.W. Fulton reached the site. Engineer Charles Van Trump laid out the townsite on sandy ground covered with sagebrush and soap weeds, with no trees at all, and Main Street became the line between the two brothers' claims. William built a house of one and a half stories on the east side and ran it as the Occidental Hotel. Few settlers came, and after its first year the town had only four buildings.

That changed in 1879. Charles Jesse Jones, later called "Buffalo" Jones, came for an antelope hunt in January, and the Fultons hired him to promote the town and to win a switch station from the Santa Fe railroad. The railroad agreed, homesteaders began to arrive that spring, and the Garden City Ditch brought irrigation to the county after a long drought. The town's first newspaper came out on April 3, 1879, and three months later its editor counted forty buildings.

“One day a tramp going through town stopped at the Occidental Hotel, which was operated by the Fultons. During a conversation with him, Mrs. Fulton happened to mention her search for a town name. Looking out the window at her beautiful garden, he suggested the name Garden City.”
Some Place Names of Kansas, 1960
  • The boom of 1885 to 1887From 1885 to 1887 settlers rushed into western Kansas, one for every quarter section, and crowds lined up at the U.S. Land Office in Garden City to file their claims. When the rush peaked, Garden City supported two daily newspapers, thirteen drug stores and nine lumber yards, and most passengers on the daily trains got off here.
  • Poles down the middle of MainWhen the first telephone line went up, trees already stood on both sides of Main Street. Residents knew how precious trees were in western Kansas and refused to let them be cut, so the poles were planted in the middle of the street instead. The town's first long-distance line, nine miles long, followed in 1919.
  • Lee Richardson ZooGarden City is home to the Lee Richardson Zoo, the largest zoo in western Kansas, and to Garden City Community College.
