About Gardners, Pennsylvania

Gardners is a village of 137 people in Tyrone Township, in northern Adams County, just off Pennsylvania Route 34. It began as Gardner's Station, a stop on the Gettysburg & Harrisburg Railroad, and by 1886 it was the shipping point for the farms in the southern parts of Huntington and Tyrone Townships. The line later passed to the Reading Railroad and then Penn Central, and the Gettysburg and Northern Railroad runs it today.

Orchards of apples and other fruit spread over the country around the village. In 1912 C.H. Musselman, who had started his company in Biglerville in 1907, built its second processing plant here. The Gardners plant took in its first apples in the fall of 1913.

  • Uriah Gardner's feed millUriah Gardner built the village's first feed mill along with its post office. A man named Myers later owned the buildings, and when he sold them to the Zigler brothers, the post office moved down to the old creamery.
  • Apples from 1913 to 2018During World War I the Biglerville and Gardners plants kept canned fruit moving despite shortages of workers, fuel and transportation. The company passed through Pet Milk, IC Industries and private owners from Vineland, New Jersey, before Knouse Foods, a growers' cooperative, bought it in 1984. About 150 workers packed apple juice and applesauce under the Lucky Leaf and Musselman labels until the plant closed in 2018 and was torn down. Knouse Foods still keeps a warehouse on the site.
  • Feed made here since 1935Zeigler Brothers began in 1935 as a local maker of feed for poultry and livestock. A major fire destroyed the feed mill in Gardners in the 1960s, but the company stayed, and it keeps both its headquarters and a plant in the village. It now makes over 300 products and ships them to over 50 countries.
