About Garfield, Clare County, Michigan
Lake began as a lumber camp that Scott Garrish settled as early as 1873. A community formed around the railroad depot by 1877. Lightning struck the depot during a fierce storm in 1892, and it burned down. A new depot was soon built, and it is now a museum.
The rail line through Lake closed in 1949, and it became the Pere Marquette State Trail. The old coaling tower still stands. It is one of the few of its kind left in Michigan.
