About Garrettsville, Ohio
Garrettsville is a village of 2,449 people in northeastern Portage County, formed from parts of Hiram, Nelson, Freedom and Windham townships. In 1803, the year Ohio became a state, Colonel John Garrett III bought 300 acres in Nelson Township for $1,313. He moved his family onto the land the next July and built a grist mill, but he died in January 1806, the same month it was due to open.
The mill outlived its builder. That year the Cleveland-Pittsburgh Road was built close by, and pioneers cut their own roads and trails to reach the highway and bring their grain to be ground. A post office named Garrettsville opened in 1830, and the settlement that grew up around the mill became an incorporated village on September 1, 1864.
- Ohio's maple sugar centerFrom the 1880s into the 1900s, Garrettsville led the maple industry in Ohio. Maple syrup and sugar makers held their first professional meeting here in 1881 and came back every year into the early 1900s. Arthur Crane canned syrup at a cannery on Windham Street, and local shops built evaporators. At the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, a farmer from near Garrettsville was judged to have made the world's best maple sugar.
- Hart Crane, born in 1899Clarence A. Crane grew up here and started out in his father's maple sugar business. His son, Harold Hart Crane, who became a major American poet, came into the world in 1899 at Freedom Street and Highland Avenue. The family left town in the 1900s, and in 1912 Clarence's Queen Victoria Chocolate Company invented Life Savers candy.
- The last great train heistIn November 1935, two members of the Barker-Karpis Gang, Alvin Karpis and Harry Campbell, held up an Erie train at the village depot. They took more than $46,000 in cash and securities, then escaped by private plane to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Karpis was caught on May 1, 1936, and served longer at Alcatraz than any other inmate. Local legend says the FBI agents who filled town gave the James A. Garfield teams their name, the G-Men.
- The downtown fire of 2014On March 22, 2014, a fire swept through downtown and destroyed about one city block, including 13 businesses. Firefighters from 34 neighboring departments came to help the village crew. No one was seriously hurt, though one Windham firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
