This restored linen postcard depicts General George Washington resigning his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army before the Congress at Annapolis, Maryland, on December 23rd, 1783. The scene took place in the Old Senate Chamber of the Maryland State House, which then served as the meeting place of the Confederation Congress , making Annapolis the nation's capital at the time. By surrendering his command rather than holding onto power, Washington set a lasting precedent for civilian authority over the military in the young republic.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly warmth. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original vibrancy.
