About Geneva, Ohio

Geneva is a city of 5,924 people in northwestern Ashtabula County, 44 miles northeast of Cleveland. A few families from Charlotte, New York, settled here in 1805. The next year, newcomers from Harpersfield, New York, organized Harpersfield Township, a large area that took in today's Geneva, Trumbull and Hartsgrove townships.

In 1816 the people living in this part of Harpersfield chose to break away and form a township of their own. They named it Geneva Township, after Geneva, New York. The town became a village in 1866, and it grew into a city when it incorporated in 1958.

  • The city that claimed the moonGeneva marked its 100th anniversary on April 12, 1966, and more than 200 people came to Geneva High School for the ceremonies. There the city unveiled its Declaration of Lunar Ownership, signed by 35 people. Under its terms, Geneva could rent or lease its moon land only if two-thirds of all residents voted for it. The declaration also offered 100 deeds for 100 acres, at $100 an acre.
  • Ransom E. Olds, born 1864The automaker Ransom E. Olds was born on June 3, 1864, at 217 West Main Street, where a marker now stands. In Lansing, Michigan, he later helped found the Olds Motor Vehicle Company, whose curved dash car, made from 1900 to 1907, was the first to bear the Oldsmobile name. It weighed about 650 pounds and had a top speed of 20 miles per hour, and its assembly method helped pave the way for mass production.
  • The Grape JamboreeEach year, on the last full weekend of September, Geneva celebrates the grapes and wine of the surrounding countryside. The Grape Jamboree fills Route 20 and Route 534 downtown with rides and food stands for two days. A parade goes down the street each day, and the weekend also brings live music and an art show.
  • A very short covered bridgeAshtabula County is known for its covered bridges, and the West Liberty Covered Bridge joined them when it opened in 2011. By some accounts, no other covered bridge anywhere in the United States is shorter.
