From the Voters and Tax Payers of DeKalb County: "Madison came from Genoa, New York, and finding a Batavia and Geneva here, as well as there, concluded to carry out the parallel, and named the place in honor of his native home. A post-office was established here by him at that time, of which he was first postmaster."
